NOTE:

The “Blue Flag” is an international symbol of quality and perhaps the most recognized environmental symbol in the world. It has been awarded since 1987 to beaches and marinas that meet strict requirements. It is noteworthy that beaches must not only have the desired water quality but also meet 29 criteria related to cleanliness, organization, information, safety of bathers and visitors, and protection of the beach and coastal environment.

The international coordinator of the program is the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), based in Denmark, with 49 member countries across all continents. In Greece, the program has been coordinated since 1992 by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN), the country’s oldest environmental organization, established in 1951. HSPN is active in environmental education with five timeless programs approved by the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, as well as in nature conservation projects, environmental interventions, and the general public’s information and awareness campaigns.
