One of the important sights in the area of Ierissos is the tower of Krouna, which is located about 1 km northwest of the town. It was a metochi, which was surrounded by a wall, which today has almost completely collapsed. It is estimated that it was built in the 15th century and its name probably comes from the corruption of the word Koroni, since sources of 1320 mention the Skala Koroni north of the region, near the port of Kleisouri. Moreover, in Ottoman documents of the 15th century, the property is mentioned as a part of Korouna and was under the monastery of Helandarion until 1542.
Then, from time to time the monastery lost the ownership of the property and until 1719, when it was bought again along with other properties in the area, it was sold and reacquired at least twice. In 1765 it was recorded as “destroyed metochi Korona of the monastery of Chelandariou” and until 1821, when the tower was burned and the metochi was abandoned, some attempts were made to repair the damage. It should be noted that there were other buildings outside the tower, such as a house, a barn and stables. During the 19th century the metochi continued to be included in the assets of the monastery of Chelandariou along with other properties in the area.
The tower today is 12 metres high. It is believed that it had another floor which collapsed. In many sources it is referred to by its full name, Tower of Krunas of the monastery of Chelandarion. The monument belongs to the jurisdiction of the 10th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities. You can only see it from the outside (there are signs on the main road outside Ierissos).
