Amphitheater

The 3D theater is located within the Cultural Center in Ierissos, Halkidiki, and has been showing digital stereoscopic – three-dimensional video projections since 2004.

3D Technology

To see something in three-dimensional form, each eye must see a slightly different image. This happens in the real world where the eyes, because they are spaced apart, have a slightly different line of sight. Then, the brain combines the two images to form a single three-dimensional image that has depth.

When watching a 3D film without glasses, one sees a strange sight. It seems unfocused, blurry, and dizzying for the viewer. The same scene is projected simultaneously from two different projectors at different angles. This is why special glasses are needed to separate the two images and allow one eye to see the image projected by the left projector, while the other eye sees the image projected by the right projector. The brain then combines these two images to form the 3D image.

The special glasses turn the projected material into a three-dimensional scene that evolves right in front of the viewer. The screen becomes a depth or a field, depending on what is projected. Watching the Olympic Games, the viewer feels as if they are in the stadium. In the opening ceremony, they feel as though they are in front of the world parading, participating in what they see, and not just a TV viewer.

The method used by the Cultural Center employs polarized lenses with linear polarization. The two projectors project the image with different polarizations. One projects with horizontal polarization and the other with vertical polarization. The glasses allow only one of the two images for each eye. Previously, other methods with colored glasses (red and blue) were used, but these did not have the clarity of today and, most importantly, did not allow the projection of many colors.
