Stanos

Stanos, located 8 km south of Arnaia, is a unique village. It is characterized by its well-maintained appearance, excellent climate (altitude 520 m), the stunning nature surrounding it, the large plain to the west, and… the joyful voices of children! Visitors soon learn that it is the second village in Greece with the most large families, and by looking at the signs on the main road, they understand that most of the inhabitants are involved in construction work. As skilled craftsmen, they could not leave their homes unattended!

According to local historical sources and oral testimonies, there are several theories about the origin of the name Stanos. One theory suggests that it was named after a general of Alexander the Great, named Stanos, who passed through the village. Another theory is that the name comes from the Latin adjective “Stanus-a-um,” meaning an area that retains water for a long time. The third theory relates to a type of metal that was once mined in a site called “Chalkoma.” According to the fourth theory, the name comes from the animal pens (“stanes”) that almost all families had next to their homes. During the Ottoman period, Stanos was part of the community of Arnaia. It became a separate community in 1922.

Another unique feature of Stanos is its local patron saint, Agia Haido, whose feast day is celebrated every year on September 1st. She is a newly martyred saint who was born and lived here during the Ottoman era. The church dedicated to her was built in recent years with the initiative of the priest Nikolaos Chalkias and the support of the people of Stanos. On the eve of her feast day, a festive vespers service is held, and on the day itself, a celebratory Divine Liturgy and procession of her icon take place, with the participation of the Metropolitan and many priests. Immediately afterward, a traditional “kourbani” (feast offering) is held at the church, and free food is offered to everyone.
