A Thousand-Year History

Mount Athos, widely known as the Holy Mountain, has been the most significant center of Orthodox monasticism since the late 10th century and is recognized as one of the foremost monuments of the world's cultural heritage. It occupies the northernmost projection of the Halkidiki peninsula, stretching 45 kilometers in length and 5 to 10 kilometers in width. It derives its name from the mountain’s towering peak (2,033 meters), which dominates this rocky strip of land.
